Spring checklist for your air conditioner
Wednesday, 5th September, 2018
Warm weather is just around the corner and Spring is in the air. But there are a few steps to take to prepare your air conditioning system for the temperature changes. Follow these suggestions below to ensure your system runs safely and effectively all year around.
Inspect your system for any signs of damage or wear
Check the condenser for signs of damage from weathering. Make sure to check the outdoor unit to see if any animals have moved in over winter.
Clean the area around your outdoor unit
Remove any leaves, sticks ore other debris that may have fallen on the ground around your unit. You may also want to trim back any plants that are within close proximity to the unit: this will help avoid anything getting caught in the fan, or blocking the intake fan.
Change or clean your filter
A clogged filter is ineffective. Before turning on your air conditioner for the first time after winter, make sure the filter is cleaned or replaced. Cleaning or replacing a dirty filter will preserve your indoor air quality and will enable the system to work more efficiently.
Dust the air vents
Dusty vents can block airflow, making the system work harder and inefficiently. Ensuring the vents are clean and cleared of any obstructions such as curtains or furniture will help to increase the efficiency of your air conditioner.
Dust ceiling fans and change their direction
Gently wipe the dust off each fan blade with a damp cloth. Check to ensure the fan blades are set to their summer setting so that cool air is pushed downward.
When it’s time to see a professional
While it may seem like a good idea to clean your system yourself, it is more often better to leave it to the professionals. A certified air conditioning specialist has the advanced training and tools required to service your system. If there is a problem, they will most likely have the parts available and be able to make the repair.
